NZ Maori Poineer badge, real or fake?

Postby pukman » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:03 pm

I believe this badge is a good one ,but i have never seen this variation with the solid necklace anywhere else that is not fake (especially E-Bay,Cap bages with sliders, and fantasy makers mark, are common ).This is a collar badge that was bought from an old English badge collection and whole collection bought back to NZ .I believe it is bronze and stamped Firman ,London. Here for your appraisal.

cheers iain

All the research and evidence I have seen on these say that the infilled area between the pendant and the chin is a sure sign of a copy, but I am surprised that no one else has posted a reply on this since you posted it in march. Firmin did make these but the ones I have seen did not have this feature. Maybe a proper expert can answer your query with a more knowledgeable opinion.

Hello Jerry,

thanks for your interest. There are many copies of this badge with the solid necklace ,mostly being sold on Ebay via the U.K.They differ from my my one because(1) They are Cap badge size.
(2) They are die pressed.
(3) Have slider attachments ,sometimes the slider has a fantasy makers name ,or a broadarrow war department stamp on them.
(4) Darkened brass or fake patina.

My collar size badge is cast bronze, and is lugged. No it has been suggested to me by another forum member that it may be a genuine Firman made badge, made for the collectors market, shortly after WW1.The jury is still out on this one.I see the latest Oldhams catalougue lists a cast bronze collar badge, which has the necklace removed, possibly this is the other version of this.

Unfortunately i unwittingly bought the Cap size copy five or six years ago. They do look authentic i must say,and theres probably a few badge collections with them in it.I have not however seen another collar size, bronze, solid necklace badge, genuine or copy.

cheers iain

I also have the fake/copy cap sized badge, with a slider and the infilled area. Only cost me £6 though, so no problem. I hope you can get a certain answer on yours before too long.

Jerry

The Gaunt version of the collar. With more research it does seem that Firmin did make collars with the infilled necklace area.

The reverse showing both makers name plates and the Firmin badge is on blades which seems to be very uncommon?
